Fredericton, NB (May 9, 2019) – – It was welcome news today for members of the New Brunswick Non Profit Housing Association (NBNPHA), as the Department of Social Development shared elements of a new provincial housing strategy. The strategy will see a combined federal-provincial investment of over $300 million over the next 10 years which will improve affordable housing in New Brunswick.
Minister of Social Development Dorothy Shephard was on hand at the 26th Annual NBNPHA conference to speak to NBNPHA members. “This strategy will provide New Brunswickers with timely access to affordable housing that meets their needs,” said Minister of Social Development Dorothy Shephard. “It recognizes the right to suitable housing in healthy, diverse communities and empowers individuals and families to reach their full potential.”
Association President Kit Hickey says, “It was very fitting to have the Minister Shephard make this announcement at our conference, as our members operate over 6000 units of affordable housing and in some cases, have been facing the expiry of their existing agreements. Remaining viable through the extension of these agreements is an immediate relief and in some cases will enable our members to continue to offer affordable and nonprofit housing in 115 communities across the province”.
NBNPHA was an active participant in the consultation sessions held while developing the strategy and is pleased with the outcome. “Obviously the funding is key and the extension of member operating agreements is huge news for the Association”, says George Cormier, Executive Director with the NBNPHA. “We are also very pleased with the people based approach to the strategy and the concept of ‘Mixed Housing Communities’ which will seek to integrate affordable housing into existing communities. These concepts show a willingness to evolve affordable housing and be adaptable to the current circumstances around the under-housed in our province”.
The strategy also designates funding to repair and renovate existing units, which is an important highlight for NBNPHA members.
